Paris: September, 1890. Newly promoted Chief Inspector Achille Lefebvre attends the execution of the anarchist assassin, Moreau. Following the execution, outgoing Chief Féraud warns his protégé: "I've heard that some of Moreau's cronies have sworn revenge."
