The back-and-forth fortunes of war from 1914 to 1918 created a large number of prisoners of war on both sides. While prisoners were generally treated much better than in World War II, surviving prisoners could tell many tales of privation and heroism. The British mass escape from Colditz Castle became a military legend, but numerous other soldiers remained in obscure and unglamorous captivity. The author has drawn on existing accounts as well as a surprising number of POWs who were still living during his researches of recent years. The moving text is supplemented by 200 photos, most of them rare, of newly-captured soldiers marching under guard (most tried to march in as correct a formation as possible) and daily life in the camps, and the numerous letters, drawings and other artifacts that have survived. Soon to be a BBC documentary.
